Planning for 2013

Planning for 2013
13 December

The end of 2012 is just over two weeks away so hopefully by now you have some ideas around what your plans are for 2013.  For those athletes considering another campaign you might be getting back into training and competing after a break post the London Games.

For others in summer sports, your New Zealand season is probably well underway and you might be competing in a number of events over the next few months.  Or you could be in a large training block as you build up to the European season or upcoming World Championships which could mean not much of a break over Christmas.

Whatever your situation, most carded athletes will have spent time with their Athlete Life Advisor and Performance Planners ensuring your planning is in place.  Considering how your sport plan might impact on other goals such as study, work or personal goals is important so you don't end up in a situation of juggling too many balls in the year.  Also remember to have a Plan A and a Plan B in place.  What happens if you get selected for the National Team - what impact will that have on your study?  What happens if you don't get the sponsorship or funding you need - does that mean you won't be able to go overseas to the competitions you need to?  What will you do?

After people, time is a campaign’s most precious resource.  Figuring out how you are going to invest your time is probably the biggest decision you need to make.
Think strategically about your time and energy.
If you are in an Olympic campaign, it is really a race to outlearn your opposition, to figure out the puzzle of performance better than anyone else

You can use this sort of template below to look at how your sport plan and life plan fit together over the next 12 months or five years or more.  Just replace the years with Months for a shorter time frame to suit.  When writing down your upcoming events, try to include what performance or outcome goal you hope to achieve, then you can see how you need to progress to track towards that goal.  It can also help show what you can fit in on the other side of the line in regards to study, work, and other committments/goals.
